Building an Order Management System and Website for Ordered Australia

Building a scalable, cost-effective order management system and website for Ordered Australia's new boutique import services business.

The Challenge

Ordered Australia faced a unique challenge: they required an order management system that catered specifically to their boutique import services. Their process involves high-touch, consultative engagements rather than simple transactions, but there was no off-the-shelf platform that met their needs. They needed a custom solution that allowed their clients to track and manage orders in real time, with stages like manufacturing, customs, and shipping updates, while maintaining a seamless experience with their public website.

The Solution

We implemented a hybrid approach to build the perfect solution for Ordered Australia:

  • Front-End: Built using Svelte 5 for a lightweight, modern user interface.
  • Back-End: Fully serverless using AWS API Gateway and DynamoDB, ensuring high scalability and minimal costs.
  • File Storage: Amazon S3 for secure and cost-efficient storage of customer attachments.
  • Public Website: Designed and developed in WordPress for easy content management and integration with the custom order management system.

This solution allows Ordered Australia's clients to log in, track the progress of their orders, upload/download attachments, and receive real-time updates. Meanwhile, the order management system gives Ordered Australia the tools to manage and update every stage of their orders efficiently.

The Results

The delivered system provides a robust foundation for Ordered Australia's operations:

  • Seamless integration of the public website and order management system, ensuring a cohesive end-user experience.
  • Startup scalability: With serverless architecture, the system scales effortlessly as the business grows, while keeping costs minimal.
  • Operational efficiency: Provides a ready-to-use digital infrastructure, eliminating the need for a manual system.
  • Flexibility: The system is designed to evolve alongside the business, allowing for future enhancements with minimal effort.

Ordered Australia's Transformation Journey

The Journey

This project was a collaborative effort from the start. Ordered Australia approached us with their initial concepts, including a draft business plan, rough ideas, and a logo. We worked closely to define both their technology needs and business processes. Using iterative feedback loops, we developed a solution that met their vision perfectly while maintaining flexibility for future growth.

Implementation Strategy

The implementation was carried out in distinct phases:

  1. Discovery and Planning: Defined key business needs, built process workflows for order tracking, and identified challenges.
  2. Design and Development:
  • The public website was designed using WordPress for ease of future updates.
  • The custom order management system was built from scratch with Svelte 5 (frontend) and AWS serverless architecture (backend).
  1. Integration and Testing: Both the public site and order system were blended cohesively to ensure a seamless user experience, despite being separate platforms.
  2. Deployment and Handover: Successfully launched the platform, providing a ready-to-grow system for the startup.

This pragmatic approach allowed us to focus development resources on what mattered most while using proven, off-the-shelf tools where appropriate.

Long-term Impact

The serverless infrastructure ensures that Ordered Australia's platform will grow with them without creating unnecessary cost burdens. The system's extensible design means future features or updates can be implemented quickly and efficiently. Additionally, clients are provided with an intuitive, real-time tracking system that enhances their trust and satisfaction. This digital-first approach has set Ordered Australia up for long-term success.
